Potential-Controlled Nitriding, Nitrocarburising and Oxidation

Potential-controlled Nitriding, Nitrocarburising and Oxidation is the process in which nitrogen potential is controlled with nitrogen (N) added into the steel surface to increase the surface hardness and surface wear resistance, resulting in longer die life.

A distinct advantage of the process is the ability to control the concentration of nitrogen on the surface hence allowing tighter tolerance with regards to the required thickness and properties of the compound layer. Other benefits include: elimination of closed nitride networks within the diffusion zone, control of case depth, control of surface hardness and negligible distortion.

ASSAB offers two other processes: potential-controlled nitrocarburising and in-process post-nitriding/nitrocarburising oxidation.

Both processes are most suited for applications requiring increased wear and corrosion resistance; while the integrated process of potential-controlled nitriding / nitrocarburising plus oxidation has the added benefit of giving the surface an attractive black or dark finish, an expressed preference among customers.
