Hot Extrusion (Metal)

Hot work tools operate at elevated temperatures and form products in aluminium, magnesium, steel and other metals.

The severe working conditions put high demands on the tool steels used in this application. In general, the steel used for hot work tools should provide excellent hot strength as well as good ductility and toughness.

Other important properties for hot work tools are high resistance against thermal cyclic stresses and good hot wear resistance. In order for the best tool performance, these properties should be uniform and even in all directions of the tool.

ASSAB offers a hot work tool steel program with grades having different combinations of:

  • Good tempering resistance
  • High hot yield strength
  • High ductility and toughness
  • Good thermal conductivity

It is especially important for hot extrusion tools to have a high hot wear resistance and good tempering resistance, as well as for the steel to be easy to machine, to heat treat and to nitride.

ASSAB 8407 2M

ASSAB 8407 2M is a Cr-Mo-V alloyed tool steel with good ductility, good toughness, good machinability as well as good hot wear resistance. ASSAB 8407 2M is a versatile tool steel which customers find useful in many different applications, primarily hot work applications. ASSAB 8407 2M is DIN standard 1.2344, JIS standard SKD 61 material and is conventionally produced. In markets served by Uddeholm, ASSAB 8407 2M is promoted as Orvar 2M.

FORMVAR

Formvar is a high performance hot work tool steel which offers a very good resistance to hot wear and plastic deformation. It is a solid upgrade choice especially from DIN 1.2344 and 1.2343 forging tools on the market.

DIEVAR

Dievar is ASSAB’s premium steel developed for the demanding application of High pressure die casting. It is the industry benchmark as the high performance steel for the longest tool life and lowest crack risks due to its superior toughness and ductility. Apart from die casting it has proven itself as a great tool steel for other applications such as forging, extrusion and hot stamping.

VIDAR 1 ESR

Vidar 1 ESR is a product suitable for both hot work and plastic mould applications, especially large plastic moulds that require good toughness in combination with high surface finish obtained by polishing or texturing. Vidar 1 ESR is an electroslag remelted (ESR) steel which provides reduction of inclusions in the material.

QRO 90 SUPREME

QRO 90 Supreme is an electro slag remelted steel suitable for applications such as hot stamping, brass forging, die casting core inserts and brass extrusion. With its outstanding thermal fatigue resistance, thermal conductivity and temper back resistance QRO 90 Supreme excels as a tool steels where tools tempers down quickly to lower hardness.

UNIMAX

Unimax is a high hardness electroslag remelted tool steel which provides great wear resistance even over extended time at elevated temperatures. This product is suitable for coating and nitriding. Unimax performs very well in precision forging, hot stamping and moulding of reinforced plastics.

ASSAB 8407 SUPREME

ASSAB 8407 Supreme is our trusted premium H13 steel for all kinds of hot work tool applications. Proven over and over again ASSAB 8407 Supreme has stood the test of time and remains well known in the tooling industry for its high and reliable performance and ease of maching. In markets served by Uddeholm, ASSAB 8407 Supreme is promoted as Orvar Supreme.
